The photographs in this gallery were all taken in Cumbria, in northwest England. The first two were taken in Keswick and the next three from a walk up Dodd Wood. The following 14 were taken from the walk up Catbells, above Derwent Water and Keswick. The next two are of Ullswater on a stunningly calm day. Along the coast, the first image is looking across the Solway towards Scotland taken from Silloth, whilst the second is looking towards Robin Rigg offshore wind farm at sunset. The snow scenes are around Burnbanks and Shap whilst the snowy panorama is of Bassenthwaite Lake.
The red squirrels Sciurus vulgaris were photographed around the village of Burnbanks. Cumbria is one of the few places in England where native red squirrels can still be seen. Where their populations overlap, the larger, non-native, grey squirrel Sciurus carolinensis out-competes the reds for food; grey squirrels also carries a virus (squirrelpox virus) that has devastated red squirrel populations. For more information about red squirrels in the north of England, see the Red Squirrels Northern England website.
